Manchester United have identified Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo as the ideal replacement for Raphael Varane, according to L’Equipe.
Varane has been a bench player over the past few games. He was only a stoppage time substitute against Fulham over the weekend.
This has spread speculation over his future at the club and L’Equipe claim that he could leave Old Trafford as early as the January transfer window.
The World Cup winner has been attracting interest from the Saudi Pro League and he could secure a big-money move midway through the season.
United are bracing for the situation with an approach for Todibo. They plan to pursue his services from Ligue 1 leaders Nice for around €50 million.
Todibo was linked with United earlier this summer, but the centre-back was unsure over the move due to the lack of guaranteed playing time.
However, the departure of Varane could encourage him to join the club as he could be assured with a starting berth in the heart of the defence.
